BOWIE, EURYDICE "VICKI"
[br][br]Vicki Bowie lived with passion and gusto, always fully involved in what she enjoyed and equally interested in what she could learn from others. Born in 1923 in Davenport, Iowa, she lived for 62 years in Southern California, where she tanned on the beach and walked in her beloved Sierra Nevada Mountains with her family - her daughters, Julie and Jodi, and her husband, Alfred (Al) who passed away in 2011. She and Al married in 1946.
Vicki was a lively conversationalist, sparking many new acquaintances with her unusual first name derived from Greek mythology. She was a big fan of the jitterbug and even volunteered as a dancer at the USO. Her work life, at the Rock Island Arsenal in Illinois, and as an Executive Secretary in Ontario, California, provided many lucky co-workers the pleasure of experiencing Vicki's unending curiosity and questioning nature, and the benefit of her optimism. And it provided her with a daily outlet to share her firm opinions on any number of things, a habit Vicki maintained throughout her life.
Loyalty and steadfastness in friendship were in Vicki's DNA. An avid Bridge player, Vicki played with the same group of friends in California from the 1950s until her move with Al to Harvard Park in Spokane, Washington in 2008. She quickly took up the habit again at her new residence and continued playing until the week before she passed away.
Old friends were never wondering whatever happened to Vicki. She kept in touch with as many of her cronies as possible, writing letters in her beautiful script, and calling on the phone regularly. To her daughters, she passed along her artistic spirit, sincere caring for others, and dogged determination to not lose track of the important things in life.
Her last year at Harvard Park, Vicki could be seen riding the Chartreuse scooter her son-in-law, Bob Oeinck, so precisely custom-ordered to her specifications. She sported her equally well-thought-out outfits, and always, her interest in everyone around her. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by many, including her surviving brother, Peter Vagenas of Newark, Delaware; her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Bob Oeinck of Spokane; her daughter and son-in-law Jodi and Ralph Patterson of Salt Lake City; and innumerable friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Al, sister Gloria, brothers; George and Jimmy and her two dearest friends, Dotti and Luci.
A gathering will take place to remember Vicki on January 25th at Harvard Park, 1616 East 30th, Spokane. Refreshments will include popcorn, her "favorite food group." In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go to the Southside Senior Community Center.

BYRNE, III, PATRICK SHEEDY
[br][br]Patrick Sheedy Byrne, III, 79, of Boise, Idaho died on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at his home with the love and support of his family and friends. He died of cancer which was complicated by an 11 year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Pat was born on June 15, 1934 in Spokane, Washington to his parents Helen Ann Cunningham and Patrick Sheedy Byrne II. Pat joined his older sister Helen Marie, and soon his younger brothers Terry, Robert and Peter and his sisters Kathleen and Molly. He attended grade school at St. Augustine's and graduated from Gonzaga Preparatory school in 1952.
Following graduation, Pat attended Washington State University for a brief time and enlisted in the Navy where he served with the Seabees on the Island of Guam for three years. This was followed by further study at Eastern Washington College and Seattle University.
Pat was married to Kathryn Downey in 1956 and had four children John, Kitty, Erin and Barrett. Pat was active in scouting and coaching his children in youth sports. In the years following Pat was a creative visionary and a risk taker. His gifts brought him success as a restaurateur, contractor, inventor, private pilot, salesman, chef, and bus driver for both the Seattle Metro and the Meridian School District.
Pat had a special place in his heart for people with special needs and was an advocate for them on his bus routes as well as through the L' Arche Community.
In 1984 Pat married Janet Sturgeon Spencer and welcomed Jan's children Kristen, Kim and David into his family. Pat and Jan lived in the Seattle area and have resided in Boise for the last 15 years. Boise became a joyous and successful home as they made great connections in their careers, their church and their community.
Pat's Catholic faith was a driving force in his life and gave him great comfort during his final days. He was an active parish member at St. John's Cathedral and most recently at Risen Christ Catholic Community. He and Jan shared two memorable trips to Lourdes where he was inspired by the healing power of faith and hope.
Pat loved an adventure! Long car rides, hunting trips, camping, fishing, boating, skiing and golfing. He and Jan enjoyed many trips to Europe and entertaining at their condo in McCall, Idaho. These activities often brought friends and family together and created many memories. Pat valued time spent with family and friends.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Helen Marie Sprague; brother, Terry; sister in law, Veda Jo Byrne; brother in law, Donald Carson; step daughter, Kristen Spencer Petersen; mother and father-in-law, Mabel and Harry Hudson.
Pat is survived by his wife, Jan Spencer Byrne at their home; his four children, John Byrne (Erin), Kitty Hennessey (Kevin), Erin Ruehl (Kevin), Barrett Byrne (Karen); grandchildren, Kellan, Brendan Byrne; Connor, Taylor, Shea Hennessey; Marshall, Parker, Paige Ruehl; Lauryn, Peter Byrne;
his step children, Kim (John) Jacobs, David (Crystal) Spencer; grandchildren, Jake, Allie (Luke), Mary, Christopher Jacobs, Zachary Weigt, Gerreson Spencer, Elizabeth Spencer; Jennifer Smith (Tony); great grandchildren, Sean, Nathanial, Isiah; his siblings, Peter Byrne, S.J., Robert Byrne (Jean), Kathy Krueger (Walt), Molly Carson (John Kettle); brother in law, William Sprague; his cherished companion, Beau, and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Vigil Service was held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Risen Christ Catholic Community, 11511 Lake Hazel Road in Boise, Idaho.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 also at Risen Christ Catholic Community.
Inurnment will be held at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or L'Arche USA.

LUHR, ALVIN "TUFFY"
[br][br]Born on August 26, 1918 in Reno, WA (near Woodland), Alvin W. Luhr was known his whole life as "Tuffy". He was raised by his mother (Lucy Berg) and step-father (Peter Berg) on a farm in the Clayton area along with two brothers and four sisters. He graduated from Deer Park high school in 1936, and attended Washington State College (now WSU) for three years before going into business partnership at a gas station in Deer Park.
In 1940 Tuffy married Marjorie Kathryn Johnson of Deer Park. They were together for 67 years before she passed away in 2007. Tuffy was one of the early aviators in the Spokane area, and flew for the Civil Air Patrol during the early days of World War II. He entered the Army in 1944 and saw heavy action in Europe as part of General Patton's Third Army. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, and was among the first soldiers to liberate the Buchenwald concentration camp.
After the war Tuffy began working in sawmills, which would be his profession for over 60 years. He moved to the Colville area in the mid-1950s, building and eventually owning the Kettle Falls Lumber Co. In the 1970s he built and owned a sawmill in Evanston, WY, then built and operated the Arden, WA sawmill for Plum Creek Lumber Co. In the 1980s and 1990s Tuffy worked as a consultant in the sawmill industry, and was on the Board of Directors of the Colville Tribal Enterprise Corporation. Most recently he was on the Board of Directors of Borgford Bioenergy.
Tuffy and his wife Marjorie enjoyed square dancing and were active in the First Congregational Church in Colville, where Tuffy served as a Deacon. In later years Tuffy and Marjorie lived at Loon Lake, and later moved to Hawthorne Manor (now Rockwood at Hawthorne) in Spokane. Tuffy passed away on December 26, 2013 at 95 years of age. He is survived by a son (Skip Luhr) in Vashon, WA, a daughter (Susan McWhirter) in Hidden Valley Lake, CA, a son and daughter-in-law (David and Iran Luhr) in Olympia, WA, a brother (Alan Berg) in Spokane, a sister (Mary Lou Olsen) in Graham, WA, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for Tuffy will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the First Congregational Church, 205 N. Maple St, Colville, WA.

NELSON, EDWARD
[br][br]NELSON, Edward Bridge, of Spokane, passed away at home January 16. Ed was born to Dr. James M. and Elsa Nelson December 23, 1937. He was a beloved husband, a proud and loving father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his wife Connie, children Shawna, James (Amanda), Jonathan, Robert, and Brenna, grandson Wyatt, brother Jim (Sue), four nieces and family pets. A daughter, Lyndsay (from previous marriage to Gina Nelson), and sisters, Vicky, and Karen Smith predeceased him. Ed enjoyed fishing, hiking, horseback riding and spending time with his children. Dad was very charismatic, quick-witted and could make anyone smile. He will be cremated and laid to rest in the Nelson family mausoleum in Spokane.

MEDCHILL, MARY E
[br][br]Mom ate her last Christmas dinner, played her last Word with Friends, and gave us her last earthly hugs. Mom died, passing from this life into the Light of God. She is deeply missed, but imagine the heavenly celebration as she reunited with her husband Paul, son David, daughter-in-law Lynda, and a host of family and friends!
Mom was born in Pennsylvania in 1925. She graduated from nursing school during WWII and later worked in hospitals, but first she was a stewardess. While flying the skies she met Paul Medchill, and her heart took a flying leap too. They married in 1950, moved to Spokane, and settled in the Valley where there were wide open fields, dirt roads, irrigation ditches and a few new homes. Mom lived in her home for almost 60 years, tending flowers, decorating for holidays, and hanging pictures of grandchildren on all the walls. She was an independent, fiery strong, and creative woman.
Mom is survived by Bill and Colleen Medchill, John Medchill, Paula and Matt Alice, her adored grand and great grands, and her brother Bob Mallory. We are grateful for the love and support given to Mom over all these years by her church family, her neighbors, the children on her block, Jake and Mary, and so many friends both near and far. You meant a lot to her. Thank you.
A memorial service will be on Saturday, Feb. 1, 1:00 pm, at the United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress, Spokane Valley.
