Catherine Diener Simpson March 20, 1912-January 25, 2014 Our Mother, Catherine Diener Simpson, passed away on January 25, 2014. She died peacefully at her residence at Rockwood Hawthorne in Spokane. She had visited with family and friends over her last several days and we all had a chance to express to her our love for this most wonderful woman. Catherine was born on the Diener Family farm near Wilbur, WA. She attended school in Lewiston, ID, Vauxhall, Alberta, Deer Park, WA and graduated high school at Newport, WA in 1930. She went to Washington State College 1930-1931 and Cheney Normal School where she met Claude Lewis Simpson, her husband-to-be of 63 years. She left Cheney with a teaching certificate in 1933 and subsequently taught school for a year in a 1-room school at Duley Lake on the Okanogan Highlands; 2 years in Nome Alaska, and 1 year at Union Gap. Catherine went back to college at WSU and earned a BA in 1960 and an MA in Education in 1962. Catherine founded Pullman Kindergarten where she taught hundreds of 5-year-olds until 1969. She and Claude "retired" in 1970 but moved to Sydney Australia where Catherine supervised student teachers in the Infants' Department of Whelen School at Mt. Druitt, NSW for 2 years. The couple returned to their Priest Lake home at Beaver Creek where they lived happily for many years, getting snowed in and wintering over for 8 seasons until landing again in Spokane. Claude and Catherine assembled an oral history of the Priest Lake country and in 1981 published North of the Narrows: Men and Women of the Upper Priest Lake Country, now in its 5th printing. With her love of books and learning, Catherine was a founder of the Priest Lake Library in 1974. The "Little Log Library" was built in 1934 as a 1-room school and is now on the National Historic Register and continues to serve the reading needs of the Priest Lake community. The family is thankful that our Granny lived a full life and lived her last years with grace and dignity. She always expressed her gratitude for everything that was done for her in her waning years and left us feeling aggrieved but relieved that she was able to live her life as she had hoped among family, friends and those wonderful people at Hawthorne that cared for her. May you rest in peace, Granny. The Family suggests donations in her name to the Priest Lake Library or the Catherine Diener Simpson Endowed Fund for the One-Room Schoolhouse at Eastern Washington University. In Loving Memory... Dale McCormick January 25, 2014 at 11:02am Today, God called one of his own home. May he forever soar with the eagles and keep us safe from above. Dale M. McCormick passed away early this morning January 25, 2014.  He was a loving husband, father and friend. Although we teased him often of being like Archie Bunker, he cared deeply for his family and friends and truly had a great sense of humor. Dale will be missed by many. He learned to fly helicopters in the Army and loved being a helicopter pilot.  He is a decorated Vietnam Veteran. His flying career included Search and Rescue, KREM 2 News Pilot, Forest Fire support and extinguishing, Christmas tree harvest and crop dusting. Not to mention other odd jobs of a pilot. Dale loved animals, mostly his two dogs Paco and Simon. He loved going to the Spokane Indians games with family and friends and tolerated camping and fishing.  Rest In Peace Dale!

[br][br]Our wonderful husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend left us to be with his Lord on January 16,2014 after a five year battle with cancer. Earl was born into a large family of Josef and Martha Nechanicky at Greenbluff, Washington. He attended Rogers High School, and left there to go to work for Montgomery Ward in Phoenix AZ. He then joined the Navy and spent four years as a Boatswains Mate on a tender during the Korean War. After leaving the Navy he worked in California for a fire extinguisher company and driving a milk delivery route. After returning to Spokane, he went to work for Canteen Vending Corp., from which he retired after twenty-six years. Earl especially loved his family, large gardens, friends, and as many stray cats as he could possibly feed. He has not missed a Gonzaga Basketball game for almost 20 years, and was one of their biggest boosters and fans. Earl leaves behind Edna, his wife of thirty-five years, four children, Pauline, Pam, Peggy and Joseph; three step-children, Steve, Shari and Tim; two brothers, Jim and Larry, two sisters, Colleen and Janice as well as numerous grand-children and great grand children. We love him and will miss him greatly, but know he will always be here with us. A memorial service, followed by a Celebration of Earl's life will be held at the Riverside Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 34221 North Newport Hwy. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Hospice House of Spokane. The help given to Earl and his family was above and beyond the call.

Cheryl was born in Hollywood, CA to Vallee and Sharon Wilds. Cheryl lost a short courageous battle to bile duct cancer surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her father Vallee N. Wilds and husband Jim McLean. Cheryl's suvivors include her mother, Sharon Wilds, daughter Rachel (Mike) Jamison, granddaughter Kaitlyn Jamison, sons Justin Eaton and Jesse McLean, and brother Val(Nancy)Wilds. Cheryl graduated from Central Valley High School in 1976 and later attended SCC where she received a degree as a Health Unit Coordinator. Cheryl worked for Sunshine Gardens for the past 7 years where she loved being a caregiver to the residents and made many wonderful friends there. Cheryl loved spending time with her family, and dearly loved her 2 Persian cats. Cheryl's life will be celebrated at a later date. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or to The American Cancer Society.

She Graduated from Eastern Washington College of Education (Eastern Washington University) in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education and later attained a Master's in Education from Lesley College. She was married twice, to James W. Campbell (1958 - 1976) and Richard H. Soderberg (1978 - 1983). Ms. Soderberg was a life-long educator. She began her teaching career in Brewster in 1958 and relocated to Spokane in 1959. She taught at North Central High School (1959 - 1960) and Libby Junior High (1961 - 1965) before settling in at Sacajawea Middle School where she was Chair of the Language Arts Department for more than 20 years. At the time she retired in 2002, Ms. Soderberg was the longest tenured active teacher in School District 81. She primarily taught language arts and throughout her career was also advisor for several scholastic activities, such as the student newspaper, yearbook and drill team. She also led over 15 student trips to Washington D.C. Ms. Soderberg enjoyed an active retirement. She was a member of the Red Hats Society, the Inland Empire Iris Society, and the Spokane Tawanka Alumni Association; she was serving as President of the latter two at the time of her death. In addition to enjoying her large circle of friends she loved to read, cook, garden and travel. She was also known to drop a few coins in area slot machines. Ms. Soderberg is survived by her two sons, Keith Campbell of Kettle Falls and Dan Campbell of Redmond; grandson Brandon Campbell of Marysville; great grandchildren Ethan and Lyla Campbell; sisters Kathryn Grundmeier of Wilsaw, Montana and Charlotte Frederking of Puyallup; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both ex-husbands; her parents; brothers Norman Foster, John Frederking and Richard Frederking; and sister Barbara Carlyle. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held in the ballroom at the Northern Quest Hotel and Resort in Airway Heights on March 8, 2014 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her honor to the EWU Foundation, 102 Hargreaves Hall, Cheney, WA 99004.
