[br][br]Grace Bracker Erickson was born Feb 17th, 1920. She left this world July 4th, 2013 after a long illness. Grace chose to write her own description of her life's accomplishments and high points, as follows.
"I was the only child of Alexander Fodor Bracker and Marjorie (Royal) Bracker, born in Indianhead, MD at an army post where my father was stationed. My paternal grandfather, Alexander Fodor, spoke many languages and was official interpreter for the Austrian court, traveling abroad with the Emperor on their foreign trips.
I graduated from Dumont, N.J. High School and Bergen College, then attended Pratt Institute of Art in New York City. I married Albert Erickson, who I met in high school at 14 years old, and wed at age 20. Both my husband and I were models for artists, photographers, and commercial companies. We lived in 17 states during our marriage, including North Carolina, Kansas, and California, but mostly in Connecticut and South Carolina. We boated as members of the U.S. Power Squadron. During summers we rented our Westport, Connecticut home and lived aboard our 32 foot cabin cruiser "Gypsy", sailing along the east coast as far as Massachusetts.
My father was a big influence on me as I grew up. He taught me to swim, play tennis, and ride horses by the time I was 9 years old. He believed in self discipline, honesty, to always finish anything one started, and never give up on a goal. These traits helped me succeed in many endeavors, especially my accomplishments in operating my own real estate office from the time I was 27 until retirement 32 years later. Many of my clients ended up being life long friends.
My husband and I had one son, Albert J. Erickson III, of whom I was very proud. He graduated from Brown University and received his P.H.D. in Marine Geophysics from M.I.T. I moved to Spokane, Washington from North Carolina to be close to him after my husband's death in 1997 ,where I lived in the Fairwood Retirement Resort. He was a fine support and helped make my life pleasant in many ways.
My husband and I loved to travel and over the years visited, and often returned to, 37 countries, making friends along the way. Spain, Portugal, and Mexico were our favorite destinations. Thailand was our absolute 'special spot'. We liked cruises, taking a half dozen.
I was a complete extrovert, a free spirit, reaching out to everyone I met. My warm, smiling personality drew people to me. I lived a long life filled with wonderful friends, and a devoted husband. I was a true lover of all animals; dogs, cats, and especially birds. My husband and I raised and showed Irish and Gordon setters. When I went into real estate full time, we switched to pedigreed cats, always adding two at a time. Usually four cats were part of our "family". In my later years, at Fairwood, I was known as the "Bird Lady" and welcomed all contributions of bread and cake from my friends.
I was an oil painter, winning some prizes for my work; also a fine seamstress, making clothes for myself, and my husband and son.
I was an avid reader, owned a library built by my father, and could discuss most anything from politics to sports. I loved to play bridge and enjoyed games such as Bingo and Bunko. I also did macramé and ceramics for awhile. I taught Sunday school, delivered "Meals on Wheels" in the Carolinas, and was a Cub Scout den mother when my son was younger. Gardening was a huge part of my interest and over the years I was president of 5 garden clubs from Ohio to the Carolinas. My house was always filled with plants and flowers and in season my husband and I grew vegetables enough to can for the winter. I also had beautifully furnished and decorated homes as a result of my art background, which included interior decorating. I always dressed carefully, with coordinating colors. I always wore earrings of exactly the perfect match for my outfit, including those inherited from my mother. Some friends referred to me as an 'elegant lady'."
