SICKEL, STEPHEN V

[br][br]Steve was born in Mitchell, SD to Stanley and Peggy. After a few years, he was joined by little brother Paul. Always the thoughtful older brother, he taught Paul to spell his name "S-t-u-p-i-d". He was a hard worker, using his paper route money to buy his first car at age 12. He then regularly drove the car and parked several blocks away from his house. When his dad found out, it was back to the ol' bike. The family eventually relocated to Wichita, KS where he graduated from Wichita East. He loved football and was a walk-on at Oklahoma University. After being on the freshman team, he decided that his chances of seeing the field were slim to none. The team's loss was Phi Delta Theta's gain. He was a lifelong OU fan (Boomer Sooner!) a trait that he passed on to his children. Upon graduation, he pursued a law degree at Kansas University, where he was a member of the ROTC. While in law school he married Suzanne McKay. After graduation, he served honorably in Vietnam as an officer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Per unit custom, this JAG officer spent a significant amount of time aboard a Huey as forward artillery observer and at the door. He received multiple commendations, including the Bronze Star. He later commemorated his service with a "Big Red One" tattoo for his time with the First Infantry Division. He and Suzanne were stationed at several bases around the country before landing in Stuttgart, Germany. They loved exploring Europe and he even learned a little German "zwei Gläser Bier bitte" (two glasses of beer please). Their son, Scott, was born in Germany as a dual citizen. He was then stationed at Ft. Carson, CO, where his daughter, Sarah, was born. He lovingly taught Sarah if she was asked about her red hair, to tell the world her daddy was an Irish Setter. Steve made a difficult decision to leave the Army he loved while at Ft. Carson to avoid frequent moves for his family. After briefly practicing law in Wichita, KS, the family relocated to Olathe, KS. He practiced law both in private practice and at the DA's office for over 30 years. He was on speed dial for many ONHS students who got traffic tickets. In the latter part of his career, he enjoyed sitting as judge pro tempore in the juvenile court. He loved coaching his kids sports teams, hunting, and flying his plane. In 2010 Steve moved to Spokane, WA so he could be a hands on grandpa. His grandkids could not have asked for a more doting and loving grandfather. He was their loudest cheerleader, and never missed the kid's events. Steve was involved with S.C.O.P.E., and when not busy trying to save Spokane, he had a great time playing bridge with his friends at the bridge studio. Steve made his exit February 12, 2016, at the home of his daughter, surrounded in his last few days by his children and grandchildren. Steve was preceded in death by family Stanley, Peggy, Paul and Suzanne. He is survived by his son Scott (McLouth, KS), daughter Sarah Davis (Spokane, WA), son-in-law Joseph, cherished grandkids David, Jake, Elise and grand-dog Catie. Per his request there will be no memorial service. We are certain he would love you to raise a margarita glass, tell a joke, and toast the unforgettable man that he was.

[br][br]Spokane Valley Native, Thomas S. Smith was born on October 14, 1924. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Valley pioneers Sidney E. Smith and Isabelle T. Smith and his sister, Jean I. Landa. Thomas S. Smith joined his wife, Thelma L. Smith on February 6, 2016 after taking his final ride on the trail. Tom was raised in Spokane Valley at the family homestead at Sprague and Pines. He met the stunning love of his life, Thelma, while they were attending Central Valley High School. Tom attended Idaho State University from 1943 to 1944, graduating from the V-12 College Navy Training Program. Following his tour of duty in the Navy, Tom graduated from the business school at Harvard. Tom married Thelma on October 4, 1946 and returned to Spokane Valley. For many years, Tom ran Sidney E. Smith Co., the real estate firm established by his father. Never afraid of a challenge, Tom entered law school at Gonzaga University in 1974, passed the bar, and practiced law until he was 89 years old. Tom loved his horses, pack-trips, his ranch, piloting a Cessna and most of all the time he spent at the family's Priest Lake home surrounded by his children and friends. Tom is survived by his daughter Karen L. Foster (Gene), sons Thomas R. Smith (Sheryl) and Scott R. Smith (Vicky) and his grandchildren Kimberly O'Donnell, Karley Willis, Lindsay B. Beal, Nicholas S. Family and friends say goodbye to a much-loved man known for his intelligence, quit wit, many talents and generosity of spirit. He leaves our hearts better having known him. Born in Royal, Iowa in 1934, Kirby served time in US Army from 1953-56 stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He returned home and attended the University of Iowa, receiving a BS in Economics in 1960. He began his professional life in Des Moines, IA with the Reminton Rand Corporation in 1960, but it took flight with LOOK Magazine and the Mutual Readers Group where he served as a regional franchise director, living in nearly every corner of the country throughout the 1960s. Family connections brought him to Spokane in 1969, but he quickly found his way to Priest Lake, ID where he lived for 18 years. Kirby reinvented himself as a contractor, building his own home and many fine homes on and around Priest Lake. He made a lasting attachment to the beautiful area and its people, and it is there his ashes will be laid to rest. He moved to Sacramento, CA in 1987 to care for his mother and remained there, working many years for McGraw-Hill, until moving back to Spokane in the fall of 2014. He maintained and valued his close relationships with his childhood and college friends in Iowa, making regular trips to the Royal area around July 4th each year to regale them with an endless arsenal of jokes, many of the best unfit to print here. He is survived by his daughter Alisa Emerick of Puyallup, WA, her husband Lars and their daughter Ellie and son Huyson; and by his son Kevin Ashburn and his daughter Lila of Portland, ME. Rather than say goodbye, at his request we pass along the German salutation "Auf Wiedersehen," which directly translates to "when we see again." Until then, Kirby, we hold you in our hearts.

To date, thanks to the extreme generosity of family and friends, $28,963 has been raised for the Epilepsy Foundation in Keely's name. Join us to celebrate her life and raise awareness about SUDEP at the NW Epilepsy Foundation annual 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Spokane's Kendall Yards.
