[br][br]Dennis went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 28, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was born April 5, 1954, in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Cynthia (Bishop) and George Grobmeier. Dennis graduated from Medical Lake High School and went on to the University of Idaho and Gonzaga University where he majored in Economics. An ardent Christian, Denny's life was characterized by his genuine love for people, manifest by the many service organizations and care related jobs he chose in his adult life. As a youth, Dennis demonstrated advanced skills in chess and basketball. He was musically blessed, playing both the guitar and piano by ear. Dennis loved to travel, watch basketball, listen to music, and visit people. Never one to complain, even as cancer ravaged his body, Denny will be remembered for his compassionate and generous nature--"He would give someone his very last dollar even if it meant he would go without." Dennis is survived by his parents, brothers Jim and John, sister Linda Loos; and his nieces and nephews. Our family is deeply grateful for the care given by Dr. Peter Schlegel at Cancer Care Northwest and by the wonder staff at Franklin Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center. A memorial service will be held at the Spokane First Church of the Nazarene, 9004 N Country Homes, Blvd on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 10 a.m.

TORESON, KAREN A

[br][br]Karen was born June 22, 1944 in Spokane, Washington. As the eldest child of Tamotsu and Yoshiko Omoto, Karen attended Lincoln Elementary School and was a "Ti-girl" at Lewis and Clark High School, graduating in 1962. Karen received academic scholarships to Eastern Washington University, where she enjoyed dorm life, Spurs women's service organization, and was president of Eastern's Associated Women Students. Karen graduated Summa Cum Laude in June 1966, majoring in Business Administration and Education. Karen met her husband of 39 years, Bruce W. Toreson, through her college roommate and lifelong friend, Merrill Thomsen. Karen and Bruce recognized their love quickly and married in August 1966. Notably, this was the same year as the first NFL Super Bowl; the two often jokingly counted their anniversaries in roman numerals. After graduating from EWU, Karen began her 47 year-long career in education teaching Business Education first at Ferris High School in Spokane, Washington and then at Ingraham High School in Seattle, Washington. During this time she continued to pursue her own academic goals, earning a Master's in Education from EWU in 1973. Education was always of utmost importance to Karen. She encouraged her children to take advantage of all learning opportunities in school and music, and continued her own tutelage with various training courses throughout her long teaching career. Karen taught at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon; Bellingham Vocational Technical Institute in Bellingham, Washington; Edmonds Community College in Edmonds, Washington; and Everett Community College in Everett, Washington. The majority of her teaching career was spent at Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Washington, where she began as a part-time sabbatical replacement for Marcia Liaw in 1986. She was hired as a full-time faculty member in 1987 and awarded tenure in 1991. As Professor of Business Technology for 27 years, Karen taught every class in the program at one time or another. She was a master teacher: innovative, dedicated, and visionary. Karen was an exceptional educator, leaving a long-lasting positive impression on many of her students. Early on Karen recognized the growing popularity of the internet and its potential to be an effective way to reach students; she was the first faculty in her area to teach an online course. Karen was instrumental in getting the Business Technology program online, and was also very involved in the Computer Information Systems program. In addition to her teaching, Karen was passionate about her involvement in the American Federation of Teachers. She began by serving as a representative to the local Executive Board, was elected 1st Vice-President in 2000, and President in 2002, serving for six years. At the state level, Karen served on the AFT Washington Executive Board from 2005-2013, and was elected as the State Treasurer from 2006-2013. She worked tirelessly to improve higher education in the state of Washington, and participated in both state and national AFT conventions. Karen's tenacity in her professional life was mirrored in her devotion to her family. Karen and Bruce moved several times in the Pacific Northwest, finally settling in Mukilteo, Washington in 1986. The family moved to their current home in the summer of 1987. Karen loved being a wife and mother, and was actively involved in her children's extracurricular activities as a room parent, band booster, and as an enthusiastic fan on the sidelines. Karen resided in Mukilteo for 28 years, and enjoyed the fantastic love, help and care by her neighbors, especially during her battle with cancer. She influenced the lives of many, and those who were blessed to know her will fondly remember her generosity, humor, and positive spirit. Karen was preceded in death by her husband Bruce W. Toreson and sister Jayni Martin. She is survived by son Brian Toreson of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Kathy Toreson of Baltimore, Maryland; brother Richard (Virginia) Omoto of Spokane, Washington; sister Margene Omoto of Spokane, Washington; brother-in-law Arthur (Karen) Toreson of Liberty Lake, Washington; best friend Karen Kreutzer; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and countless friends. A memorial service to celebrate Karen's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday April 5 at the North Seattle Church of the Nazarene, 13130 5th Avenue NE Seattle, WA, 98125. Contributions in Karen's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.

SHERRY M HUTCHISON3-30-1948 ... 2-26-2014

Sherry McCay Hutchison was born in Atlanta, Georgia March 30, 1948 and died Spokane, Washington on February 26, 2014. She is survived by spouse Jamie and daughter SaraEllen Hutchison, as well as cousins in Chicago and Atlanta, and Jamie's sisters, their families, aunt, and cousins across the Northwest. Sherry was preceded in death by parents Raymond C. and Sarah Pattillo McCay and younger brother, Ray, Jr. Sherry's childhood in Atlanta was unique due to her father's career in the early days of TV and as a local radio personality. From being held by Dinah Shore as an infant to later meeting both Trigger and Roy, and Rin Tin Tin and Rusty, Sherry had a childhood of interesting highlights and memories, including a role on her father's children's TV program, "The Skipper Ray Show." Sherry's fondest memories include Dick Van Dyke's family coming to backyard barbecues and Mr. Van Dyke making a comedy act out of unfolding the lawn lounge chairs while getting his long arms and legs caught between the frame and straps. He never disappointed when begged to re-create a variation of this hilarious routine on every visit. In the mid-60s the family went into the motel business on the Gulf of Mexico's famous "Redneck Riviera" of Panama City Beach, Florida, aka "PC." Sherry said it was like living in a sitcom, as the family's adventures included drunken guests out-shouting the Alabama and Auburn fight songs, stray baby alligators, sharks dangerously close to the shore, and hurricanes. When Sherry met Jamie in PC, perhaps it was his cowboy boots, or the fact that Spokane does not have alligators, but she was smitten, and this was the beginning of their 43-year marriage. Sherry graduated from EWU in 1975 with bachelor's degrees in English and Education. Sherry was proud of her several careers: as a substitute teacher, a vendor representative and merchandiser in department stores for fashion accessories and housewares, a "Sane Cat Lady," a wife and homemaker who kept Jamie happy for 43 years with her Southern charm and amazing cooking, and as a mother who nurtured her daughter's love of dancing and musical theater. Sherry's wit was loved and appreciated by friends and family. She was known to always have the perfect comic observation. When Sherry informed friends and family of her lung cancer diagnosis, she joked that although her four-year anniversary of quitting smoking would not be much of a celebration (other than counting the money she'd saved by not buying cigarettes) she would at least avoid many maladies of old age. She quipped, "Sometimes 65 is old enough....No worry about walkers or wheelchairs. No anxiety over oxygen, osteoporosis, or Alzheimer's....Apologies and kudos to those of you who are already meeting some of these elder challenges with grace, humor, and patience, personally or as a caregiver.... Question: How long before there will be pink electronic cigarettes with the breast cancer fundraising logo?" Sherry wanted to thank: Drs. Cutter and Margraf of Group Health, Hospice of Spokane, and to her dear friends of 50 years, Dianne and Bill Joy of Atlanta and Kathleen Bacuzzi of Plymouth, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane, 2nd Harvest Food Bank, or your favorite local animal welfare agency. There will be no service. Instead, Sherry requested "that everyone spend some time fostering (or finding) their humility. And, finally: Whether it's hassle or fun / Don't put off anything / Unless you're willing to die / Having left it undone."

[br][br]Vern slipped into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 26th, 2014. Born to Robert and Gladys Petrie on May 16, 1936 in Bemidji, MN, Vern moved to Spokane at an early age. He graduated from Rogers HS in 1954. Preceded in death by his parents and brother Milton, Vern leaves behind his brother Dale (Pati) of Spokane. He also leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Charlotte, and four sons: Steve of Boise, Greg (Susan) of Spokane, Darren (Nancy) of Rockville, MD, and Alan (Steph) of Liberty Lake. Vern was so proud of his four sons; he never missed the chance to tell everyone how wonderful his boys were and claiming that they were "never a bit of trouble." He also leaves behind his much loved grandchildren: David, Amy, Eric, Joshua, and Jesse. He was so proud of them! His Lord and his family were the center of his life. A special thanks to his many Doctors and caregivers that have helped him so much over the past five years, especially his kidney transplant team. Vern was a hardworking, friendly man who endeared himself to many. He worked many years in the commercial trucking business as a mechanic and manager, where his resourcefulness and work ethic were second to none. In his spare time he loved reading, but he was also known as a prolific gatherer of firewood! He will be greatly missed, but we are all blessed for having known him. He loved the people of Foothills Community Church where a service will be held April 19th at 10AM.
