[br][br]Karen Kay Davies, 74, of Loon Lake, Wash., passed away June 5, 2015 in Spokane, Wash. Karen was born December 5, 1940, in Everett, Wash. to Matt and Sylvia Johnson. An only child, she spent her early years in Sand Coulee, Mont. before moving to Spokane with her parents in 1950. She graduated from John R. Rogers High School in 1958 and Western Washington State College in 1962. At Rogers she met her future husband, Dick, and they were married September 2, 1961. Dick and Karen had nearly 54 years of wonderful marriage together. They lived in Everett and Edmonds, Wash.; Fort Worth, Texas; and later settled in Everett again for 38 years. Karen taught Spanish, English and home economics at Evergreen Middle School, and later was a home economist for the Snohomish County Public Utilities District. Karen stopped working to raise two children, but then went back to work at the Snohomish County Literacy Coalition at Everett Community College for 18 years. Karen was passionate about reading and education, and through her efforts leading the Coalition, hundreds of adults learned how to read. Karen was an avid reader and encouraged reading by routinely giving books as gifts. She researched her and her husband's family trees and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Her creative talents included interior decorating and sewing, and she made numerous quilts, pillows and clothes. She loved animals and nature, and when she retired to Loon Lake with Dick in 2007, she enjoyed the wildlife, growing flowers and tomatoes, and volunteering her time with the Loon Lake Land Conservancy. Karen was a loving, caring wife and mother and had several close friends. She had perseverance and strength in a very quiet and gracious way. She expressed her generosity in a personal way that led to many special memories. Family time was her favorite, and she enjoyed family games, making pies, and conversation over a glass of wine. Karen is survived by her husband Dick, son Ben, daughter Kris and son-in-law Jason Krolak. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials in Karen's name may be made to the Loon Lake Land Conservancy, PO Box 153, Loon Lake, WA 99148 or your favorite charity. A reception to celebrate Karen's life will be held 2-6 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at the Old School House in Loon Lake, 4000 Colville Road.

[br][br]George "Mick" Hotrum, 71, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2015 in Missoula, Montana. Mick was born to George and Marion Hotrum, on May 27, 1944 in Spokane and had deep family ties to the area. He attended Eastern Washington State University and Cascade College after high school but soon followed his brother, Lanny, to Alaska and never looked back. MIck loved everything that Alaska had in store. He was well known for his large stature and even larger personality. He was an avid hunter that had many close encounters during adventures in the wild. He was larger than life and his humor made people feel comfortable and his stories fascinated them. He loved his God more than anything and always shared that part of his life with those he met. In Juneau, Alaska he met Sharon Baker. Mick and Sharon married in 1967 and had three daughters, Tonja, Katrina, and Tara. His daughters meant the world to him. Mick enjoyed spending family time camping, hunting, restoring vintage automobiles, drag racing, coaching his daughters teams, volunteering at his church and giving assistance to those in need. Mick married his childhood sweetheart Eileen in 2003 in Tucson, AZ. Mick transformed the ten country acres in Spokane into a beautiful park and he enjoyed it every day. He delighted in having people over and had many large bbqs where stories of his exploits permeated the gathering. There was no better evening than listening to him and visiting Alaska friends retell their adventures. . Mick never slowed down. Even as his health failed he always had something new he wanted to try, somewhere to go and someone new to meet. He was busy doing those very things on his very last day. Mick was preceeded in death by his mother and father, grandparents Richard and Nina Bush, Fred and Mary Hotrum, brothers Larry Kappler and Lanny Hotrum, and brother in law Gordon Smith as well as many friends. [br][br]Betty Ann Zurenko passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 30th. She is survived by her sister Marilyn Thompson (Gene) of San Angelo, Texas, her loving and caring husband John Zurenko of Spokane and her two daughters Connie Wais (Greg), Issaquah, WA and Stephanie Zurenko, Lacey, WA and four grandchildren, Morgan Wais (Lindsay), Hayley Mathis (John), Casey Morehead, and Riley Morehead, and five great grandchildren Nolan, Paisley, Torin, Maxwell, and Ayla. Betty was preceded in death by her dear brother Tom (Chester) Beaston, and her parents, Chester and Mary (Short) Beaston. Betty was born in 1934 in Durango, Colorado and graduated from Durango High School. She spent her youth on her parent's cattle ranch on the LaPlata mesa becoming an accomplished horsewomen and achieving the title of Durango Rodeo Queen. She was also active in 4H where, among other achievements, she raised and showed a Colorado Grand Champion Hereford steer. After high school Betty attended Fort Lewis College living on the early campus in Hesperus, Colorado. Betty began her career as an administrator working at Fort Lewis College then Montana State University, in Bozeman, Montana where John worked toward his advanced degrees. After receiving his PhD, the family moved to Cheney, WA where John accepted a teaching position at Eastern Washington University in the winter of 1968. Following their relocation to Cheney, Betty worked for EWU, and the Cheney School District. Culminating her career, Betty advanced into the position of Manager of the Cheney Employees Credit Union. During her twenty year tenure as manager, Betty oversaw many additions to services offered to members as well as improvements in facilities, including a new building which the credit union still occupies today. Betty was an avid animal lover and especially enjoyed her feline children. In addition to her own pets, over the years she fed and cared for many stray cats (and an occasional skunk family) that were always abundant in Cheney. Betty retired in 1995 at which time she and John moved to their home on Latah Creek in Spokane. There, she took great pleasure in watching the abundant wildlife that frequent the creek-side behind their home. Supporting animals and their habitat through membership in the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, and the National Geographic Foundation, in addition to animal rescue services, were important to Betty. She was an avid reader, enjoyed exercise and travel. During her time on this earth she asked for so little and gave so much. She and John became members of the St. John's Lutheran Church on Meadowlane Road where memorial services will be held Saturday, July 25th at 11 am. The family has plans to inter her ashes at the family burial plot in Durango later in the summer, at which time a memorial service will be held for her family and friends that remain in Durango. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to Spokanimal PO Box 3151 Spokane, WA 99220.
